For the past 19 plus years, Rita's has been giving away a free, regular size Italian Ice to each and every guest to mark the first day of spring! In 2011, Rita's guests showed their spring spirit and over 1.2 million cups of Italian Ice were given away in a ten hour period!

Rita's annual giveaway will be held on Tuesday, March 20 from noon to 9 p.m. at all open Rita's locations. This is surely a tasty tradition that you won't want to miss!

MusicBuild 2011 - A Contest for Young Inventors!

The Music School of Delaware

MusicBuild 2011!

MusicBuild 2011 is a contest and opportunity for young inventors to demonstrate their creativity and ingenuity in the invention of a new musical instrument or an original device that creates musical sounds. Individuals and teams are encouraged to enter the contest. It is open to pre-college age students in two age categories. Enrollment at the Music School is not necessary. Presentation and judging will take place in conjunction with The Music School of Delaware’s Showcase event on Wednesday, June 8, 2011, at The Grand Opera House. Contest winners will receive cash prizes and will be introduced on The Grand’s main stage.

WHAT

A fun time for homeschooled children to showcase their knowledge of a geographical region or era in history without the pressure of being judged for their work. Also an easy way to teach children presentation skills in an area they are enthused and excited about.

All participants will receive a participation certificate, and students traveling through the exhibits will receive passports.

GUIDELINES

SET UP: 9:15 a.m.

FAIR OPENS: 10:00 a.m.

FAIR ENDS: 11:30 a.m.

CLEAN UP: must be done by noon.

DETAILS:

TABLES:

Full 2.5' x 6' table or half that. Tables will be provided. Tables will need to be covered with a cloth.

TRI-FOLD BOARD:

To stand in the back of your exhibit, labeled with the title of your exhibit. (geographical region or historical period)

ALSO ON TABLE OR TRI-FOLD BOARD:

Anything else you decide to display; pictures, charts, fact pages; can go here, as well as on the table. A map of your region is also good for display.

RUBBER STAMP AND INK PAD or STICKERS:

To mark in each student's "passport" as he/she visits your exhibit. The stamp should have something to do with the region/era you're presenting. For example: an eagle to represent the United States, the Irish flag for Ireland, etc.

FOOD SAMPLES:

You may provide samples to represent your region/era, but this is not necessary. Example: Goldfish crackers for presentation of Japan. Keep it small and simple.

OTHER DISPLAY IDEAS:

You may hang things from ceiling tiles, play music, do cultural dances, dressing up in costume is recommended but not required. Doll, models, charts, books, artwork, are all good ideas!

Someone must be at the exhibit at all times!

A parent, sibling or friend who has worked on the project.

Know your material and be ready to explain what your visitors are seeing.

A bi-monthy capture the flag game for homeschoolers of all ages!

Play a style of Capture the Flag that involves foam swords, shields, daggers, spears, foam arrows and bows. The game also includes a serious amount of improvisational acting (mostly around dying!). It is cooperative and fun spirited.

"Fourth Friday Drumming Circles & Music Jam"

Focus will mostly include African and Mid-East rhythms, but all drumming is welcome. Participants are asked to bring a drum or other percussion instrument. Melody instruments (such as flute, clarinet, etc.) are also welcome, as are dancers if room allows. Open to everyone, but children should be accompanied by their parents.

No advance registration needed.

There's no fee to participate.
Donations are always appreciated.

The comics industry has been going strong for almost a century, and cartoons even longer! In this class we'll be starting from the beginning: we'll deal with character design, story writing, page layouts, lettering, inking, as well as a number of other issues that come up in the creation and production of comics. Students will produce their own short comics and collaborate with one another the way the pros do. Supply list will be provided upon enrollment.

"Off the Page: A Morning with Charles Todd" at the Hockessin Public Library

Caroline and Charles Todd (writing as Charles Todd) will appear in Hockessin to talk about their work and sign copies of their newest book, A Lonely Death.

A Lonely Death, released in January, is the 13th book in the Todds' Ian Rutledge mystery series. The novel explores the effects of bullying and how the results of constant harassment can lead to the ultimate revenge. The New York Times Book Review wrote, "The tragic sweep of Charles Todd's historical mysteries grows more expansive with each successive novel in his stunning series."

Back at the zoo, a live animal program will focus on how animals change water and water changes animals! This is an outdoor program, so dress comfortably for the weather!
