Young Artists ~ Delaware Art Musuem Wants to Show Your Work!

 Youth Exhibition

 Showcasing the work of young artists living in the State of Delaware.
Young artists, ages 13 -18, are invited to bring one two-dimensional work of art—no larger than 12 inches in height or width—to the Museum on Saturday, October 6, from 10 a.m. – 2 p.m.
Exhibition space is available first-come, first-served, and works of art submitted will be on display in the Museum from October 20, 2012 through January 13, 2013.

Beyond Words: The Symbolic Language of Plants at the Delaware Art Museum!

Extended date!
Now through July 29, 2012

This exhibition features approximately 40 works of art by 17 artists known as Studio 155, a group of Washington, D.C.- based artists who work together and individually to expand their visions of the natural world through botanical art. Part of the Museum’s Outlooks Exhibition Series, this exhibition will feature images of plants based on the historical symbolism of plants throughout history.

Summer Art Camp Programs at the DCCA!

The DCCA will offer weekly camps from June 25 through August 10, 2012 for ages 4 - 15.  Children will work with professionally trained Teaching Artists and have full access to DCCA galleries. Campers will explore contemporary takes on a number of art themes, including technology, language, and innovative materials. Optional weekly pre-camp (8 - 10 am) and post-camp (4 - 6 pm) sessions are available for an additional fee.

Need-based scholarships are available for all camp sessions

Meet Local Artist Robert Jackson ~ Discussion and Book Signing!


WHAT:
Bob Jackson will discuss his art and a new book about his art in a lively and informal chat. Robert C. Jackson Paintings contains 130 images of Jackson's paintings with details, photographs of the artist at work, sketchbook reproductions, and an interview. Jackson is one of a group of contemporary artists dedicated to preserving the great American still life. Copies of the book are available in the Brandywine River Museum Shop for $59.99 (hard cover).

Science Club

Join teacher Maribeth Low to explore what science is and what is says about the world around us. Children are naturally inquisitive, and want real answers to their questions! They are also naturally inclined toward hands-on experimentation. We will combine these two natural interests to guide the student into scientific thinking and actual science investigation. Children are able to delve into physics, biology, chemistry, scientific record-keeping, and more. Students will participate in small group discussions focusing on both the results and interpretations of experiments.

Linda Bunting-Rios has been providing vibrant musical experiences for schools and camps for over 15 years. She plays piano and guitar and uses these, in addition to her singer/songwriting abilities, to make each class an exciting experience. Classes will consist of carefully selected songs, exposure to world music and instruments (with an emphasis on guitar and piano), music theory and music theatre.

Taught by actor, playwright, director and educator George Tietze, this workshop is designed to allow students to fully express themselves physically, emotionally and intellectually. In training as actors we engage body, mind and soul; each class will emphasize physical exercise to increase flexibility and spatial/body awareness, vocal exercises to increase verbal acuity and activities designed to help with concentration and mental agility. Students will learn how to bridge their own natural facility with imaginative play into a more complex and thorough narrative while they learn the rudiments of stage presentation and improvisation.

Join pro photographer Heather Siple to learn the nuts and bolts of still photography, with an emphasis on making the most of your own camera! Topics include composition, lighting, shooting motion, portraits, nature photography, color vs. black-and-white imagery and more with weekly photo shoots, discussions and critiques. The class will culminate in the creation of a student anthology and art show.

Dance Groove

This high energy class is a jazz based introduction to dance designed to build rhythm, balance, coordination, and musical awareness. Students will learn how to execute jumps, turns, funky footwork & elements of break-dance. Emphasis is on fun! This class encourages self expression, cooperative group work and showcases student inspired choreography. The atmosphere is relaxed and the focus is on creative process. Gymboree

Gymboree for Toddlers 4:10-4:45 $105
This class is designed around a concept such as “Up and Down”, “In and Out” or “Over and Under”. By using a concept the children can foster an understanding of a particular area each week with emphasis on gross motor movement. Children at this age are also very interested in imagination and creative play. We will incorporate various themes such as “Gymboree Circus”, “Down on the Farm” or “Teddy Bear Picnic”. This allows children to use their imagination while exploring physical, social and cognitive development.

This class is specifically designed with your child’s growing social skills in mind. It focuses on co-operative play, following directions and gross motor movements. We will also introduce foundations for various sports including racquet sports, volleyball, basketball, gymnastics, hockey and baseball.

Soccer Shots

Each 30-minute session is designed to creatively introduce your child to the sport of soccer. Soccer Shots is a national youth sports program with a provider in New Castle County. Doodle 4 Google Sponsored by The Delaware Children's Museum!


The Delaware Children’s Museum is supporting Doodle 4 Google, a national competition open to students in grades K-12, by encouraging Delaware kids to enter and by exhibiting the State Finalists’ doodles in an exhibition this summer.

The annual competition, like so many of the DCM’s programs and exhibits, encourages and celebrates the creativity of young people. Submissions will be judged in five grade groups—K-3, 4-5, 6-7, 8-9, and 10-12—and official entry forms can be obtained at the DCM or online at http://www.google.com/doodle4google.

The winning doodle will be featured on google.com, and the winning doodler will receive a $30,000 college scholarship, a $50,000 technology grant for his or her school, and other prizes.

Book: Seven Blind Mice, by Ed Young
This class will include a Museum tour and an art project.

Create Your Own Ceramic Finger Labyrinth!

The Finger Labyrinth class will not be held on Wednesday September 28th, 2011.

On Sept. 28th we will learn about the history, uses and types of labyrinths and then create our very own personal labyrinth. Then on Oct. 12th return to center to pick up your glazed and fired labyrinth, experience a labyrinth walk and enjoy a pot-luck meal with new friends.

Art on the Town at DCCA!

MOVABLE FEAST

DCCA resident artists Hoyun Son and Jung A. Woo in collaboration with students from the Latin American Community Center (LACC) and the Delaware Center for Horticulture (DCH) will present a "movable feast" during the Art on the Town celebration on Friday, Aug 5 from 5 - 9 pm. The LACC students have spent the last six weeks researching and gathering local edible weeds; collected, mapped, and illustrated recipes from family, friends, and neighbors; and designed a Feast Event to share with the public. a presentation of the Art & Community Visual Arts Residency Program.

This exhibit is part of the City of Wilmington's First Friday Art Loop!
A citywide event that takes place on the first Friday of every month - all year!

This exclusive new program for homeschoolers combines and connects literature with viewing and making art. During each session, homeschoolers will read and have lively discussions about a pre-assigned story related to artwork in the Museum’s collection, view and discuss related works of art, and express their creativity with a corresponding art project in the Museum’s studios.

FREE Lecture: Bulgarian Illustrator Iassen Ghiuselev at The Delaware Center for the Contemporary Arts!

Intro to Improv: Young Teen Class

Improv is like skydiving: it looks terrifying, but once you do it, you never get over the thrill! This class is designed to introduce and implement the basic rules of improv. The structure provided by these rules allow us to successfully build scenes through short-form games, creating, accepting, and building on the suggestions of the group or the audience. Improvisational theatre is a wonderful way in which to develop social skills centered on teamwork, focus, creativity, and enthusiasm. The final class will be open to parents who wish to observe their child’s work in an informal performance-geared session.

ABOUT THE TEACHERS

Victoria Larsen- has a B.A. in Drama and Humanities from Washington College. She has been acting professionally since graduation, and has appeared for three seasons with the professional cast of the Pennsylvania Renaissance Faire.

Rebecca Morgan- has a B.A. in fine arts from Haverford College. At Haverford she concentrated in drawing and printmaking, and her thesis project emphasized the influence of comic art and graphic novels on her work. She has studied art at DCAD, the University of Delaware, and the Appel Farm Arts & Music Center, and was the T.A. for four foundation printmaking classes at Haverford last year.

Homeschool Museum Classes are designed to serve small homeschool co-op groups or individual homeschool families. Each class takes place in the Museum’s permanent galleries and is designed as an interactive lesson that encourages students to examine objects and ideas through a variety of activities including discussions, drawing and writing in the galleries. Preschool age group class will have a book read to them in the galleries, look at original works of art that relate to the book, and make an art project to take home.

Student Fees:

$8 per class (Museum Members)

$10 per class (Non-Members)

Reduced Rate if you sign up for 4 classes or more,

$ 7 per class (Museum Members) $9 per class (Non-Members)

Chaperones Fee:

$4 per class (Museum Members)

$5 per class (Non-Members)

$1 off each class when signing up for 4 or more classes

*As there can be no more than 30 participants (including chaperones) in each class, parents who wish to accompany their child must sign up in advance.

Reading, Writing, Art, & PE ~ Classes for Homeschoolers at the Brandywine YMCA!


HOME SCHOOL CREATIVE WRITING SAMPLER I & II
Ages 9-13
Wednesdays 12:30-1:30 pm
This class will instruct your home school students in the art of getting creative with writing! Topics explored in the first session will be Poetry and Life Writing. Topics explored in the second session will be Story Writing and creating a picture book. Each class period will include journal writing, fun writing exercises, creative projects, and examples of writing from classics of children’s literature. Sara Rowe, who has a MA in Children’s Literature and has been published in a number of pre-teen and teen magazines, will teach the class. Class is limited to eight students. A materials fee of $5 for each session must be paid to the instructor on the first day of class.

HOME SCHOOL READING FUN

(9-13 year olds)
Wednesdays 1:45-2:45 pm
Children will have fun with the books they read! Over the course of each session several children’s classics in different genres will be assigned. Students will participate in discussion related to the topics explored in the book and in themed activities and crafts. A list of the books that will be read over the course of each session can be obtained by emailing the instructor at sararowe29@gmail.com. Your children will have the opportunity to express themselves creatively using pencil, charcoal, pastel, paint, and clay. Basic art skills will be introduced as well as some fun projects that incorporate these skills. This is a complete well-rounded art program. Basic supplies are provided.
