Summer Art Programs for Children at the Brandywine River Museum

Featuring thematic guided tours followed by hands-on art projects!

Programs for ages 3 to 10 year olds:

Museum Explorer Mornings
* Designed for children ages 3 to 10 accompanied by an adult.
* The programs take place on Thursdays, with sessions beginning at 10 and 11 a.m.
* Participants may sign up for one or all five programs. The days and themes include:

July 2 - Red, White and Blue
Search for the colors of the American flag in works of art, then design patriotic pictures using red, white and blue art materials.

July 9 - Looking at Lines
Discover different types of lines--straight, curved, diagonal and horizontal--in drawings and paintings from the museum's collections. Following at tour, design linear compositions using "scratch art" paper.

July 16 - Apples and Oranges
Learn the secrets of still life painting, including artists' use of shading, scale and perspective to crate realistic images. After the gallery tour, experiment with these techniques by drawing, cutting and pasting still life pictures.

July 23 - Museum Safari
Be on the lookout for painted and sculpted animals of all sorts and sizes on a museum safari! Next, make animal sculptures using Crayola's Model Magic©.

July 30 - Who Am I? Peering at Portraits
Become a detective and uncover hidden clues in painted portraits. After the gallery mysteries are solved, make colorful cut-out portraits with some unexpected materials.

Advanced Explorer Workshops
* In-depth sessions designed for children ages 10 to 14 from 10:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.
* The programs are held on selected Tuesday mornings.
* Featuring museum tours followed by hands-on art projects.
* Participants may sign up for one or all three programs.
* The days and themes include:

July 7 - Scenes of Summer
Explore the art of landscape in the museum, then sketch the details of the natural landscape along the riverbank using colorful oil pastels.

July 14 - Focus on Fruits
Learn artists' techniques for making painted objects look real through an in-depth look at the Fruits of Summer exhibition. Next, apply concepts of scale, color, shading and perspective in still life compositions using pencil and watercolor.

July 21 - In Black and White
Investigate artists' use of line, pattern and spatial design on a museum tour. Then, experiment with lines, contrasting shapes and interesting patterns using charcoal pencils or pen & ink. Finally, translate your favorite drawing into a black and white print.

Sing Joyfully! A Treble Choral & Arts Camp

This five-day camp for children ages 7 to 12 with unchanged
voices focuses on choral performance and healthy singing
techniques, enriching the experience with other fine arts. Along
with choral singing and rehearsals, students will participate in
music theory and ear-training, drama, visual arts and dance/
movement activities each day. Special guests of interest to the
young singer will be featured daily. The week will culminate in a
choral performance on Friday.

(unchanged voices; children must be able to read words)
