"100 Healthy Habits" sponsored by Delaware Children's Museum and Nemours!

Physical Activity, Nutrition and Oral Health

In observance of National Childhood Obesity Awareness Month.
As families explore the museum they will encounter stations designed to teach and promote healthy habits. Kids can try kickboxing and yoga, and learn about the importance of good oral hygiene.

General admission is $12 per person
(children under 12 months are free).

Reading, Writing, Art, & PE ~ Classes for Homeschoolers at the Brandywine YMCA!


HOME SCHOOL CREATIVE WRITING SAMPLER I & II
Ages 9-13
Wednesdays 12:30-1:30 pm
This class will instruct your home school students in the art of getting creative with writing! Topics explored in the first session will be Poetry and Life Writing. Topics explored in the second session will be Story Writing and creating a picture book. Each class period will include journal writing, fun writing exercises, creative projects, and examples of writing from classics of children’s literature. Sara Rowe, who has a MA in Children’s Literature and has been published in a number of pre-teen and teen magazines, will teach the class. Class is limited to eight students. A materials fee of $5 for each session must be paid to the instructor on the first day of class.

Children will have fun with the books they read! Over the course of each session several children’s classics in different genres will be assigned. Students will participate in discussion related to the topics explored in the book and in themed activities and crafts. A list of the books that will be read over the course of each session can be obtained by emailing the instructor at sararowe29@gmail.com. Your children will have the opportunity to express themselves creatively using pencil, charcoal, pastel, paint, and clay. Basic art skills will be introduced as well as some fun projects that incorporate these skills. This is a complete well-rounded art program. Basic supplies are provided. Fall Classes for Homeschoolers at the Delaware Art Museum!


Learning to Look

Wednesdays
October 20 – November 17
(5 week session)
10:30 a.m. – 11:30 p.m.
$18 Members/$20 Non-Members


How can we learn to see more when we look at art? Homeschoolers explore the Museum’s collections through activities and discussions focused on looking at, thinking about, and responding to works of art.

Elements of Art

Wednesdays
February 16 – March 9, 2011
(4 week session)

Learn how the basic elements of design (line, color, shape, and texture) work together as a visual language.

Painting with Words

Wednesdays
March 30 – April 20
(4 week session)

In this session, homeschoolers build their vocabularies and stretch their imaginations while responding in writing to works of art. Homeschoolers will enhance their knowledge of literature and hone their own language and writing skills with the creation of poems and stories in the galleries.

Age breakdowns for above classes:

Ages 3 – 6
Students and parents/guardians participate in a story-reading which leads to a viewing of relevant works of art, followed by a hands-on art project. Parents/guardians are required to stay with their child during the story and tour portion of the program and may be asked to assist during the art activity.

Ages 7 – 9
Students take a guided theme tour for 30 minutes followed by a 30-minute art activity inspired by their tour.

Ages 10 – 13 and 14 – 18
Students take a guided theme tour for 60 minutes which includes writing exercises, sketching in the galleries, and take-home assignments. Some weeks may include art projects.

Students will learn the fundamentals of art in the Museum’s studio. Basic drawing and painting will be explored, focusing on processes and techniques. The class will visit the Museum’s galleries to draw inspiration.
