Open Connections, an educational resource center and learning community for young people and their families, is giving a presentation for those just starting out with home education or for those interested in pursuing home education. This two-hour presentation provides parents and guardians with information on how to comply easily and fairly with the state law and how to create the educational path that is right for their family.

The discussion includes numerous examples of resources and alternatives to conventional curricula. This is a free presentation and is held several times a year.

Foundations Program

K4-6th
Specially trained, parent tutors model the classical method and present new grammar for the week in 7 different subjects: math, English, science, Latin, history, geography & timeline. The children have presentations, participate in fine arts, a science project, and a fun review time.

Essentials
1:00pm-3:15pm
Intensive language arts and writing program for 3rd-6th graders.
Students learn all the sentence structures, parts of speech, diagramming, and use Institute for Excellence in Writing materials to learn writing structure and style. Essentials also includes 30 minutes of advanced math drills disguised as fun games.

College-Prep Program
A trained, parent-tutor models the Classical method as it is applied to the study of grammar, exposition, logic, research, debate and rhetoric. Students learn to think through subjects using a Biblical world-view.

A local community of like minded families who get together with their students to study Christian, college-prep academics in a classical environment.

Grades K4-12th grade.

The Grammar school studies memory work in several subjects including history and Latin, skip counting, related cartography/geography, the arts, public speaking, science experiments and much more. The High School studies a rigorous range of academics including geometry, calculus, physics, history, theology, composition and more. All under the careful eye of a trained, paid tutor, while involved students also participate in mock trial, protocol, field trips, Socratic circles and other related events!

Open Connections Process Workshop!

Monday June 21 through Thursday June 24
9:15am – 2:15pm each day

This four-day course focuses on the key ingredient of the Open Connections approach to
education and parenting. They call it Process Consciousness, and it lies at
the heart of all that they do.

"Parents and other educators will learn to
identify ways of thinking and speaking that dramatically increase their
probability of success in any interpersonal exchange."

Participants will learn:
* Skills to turn conflicts into creative, win-win problem-solving
sessions—even between four year olds
* How to end whining (for themselves and others)
* How to reverse the negative effects of competition and replace them with
the joys of collaboration
* How to avoid getting sucked into “helping” where it’s really not wanted
* How to set boundaries that will be honored and thereby end nagging
* How to nurture self-motivation (again, in oneself and others) and stop
encouraging complacency and unproductive dependence
* How to get what we most want by getting our wishes, feelings, thoughts
and behaviors all in alignment.

Tuition:
$300 for individuals
$500 for a family.

Childcare for 4-10 year olds will be available through the OC Summer
Mini-Camp, held concurrently, for an additional fee.

Early Connections ~ Natural Learning and Open Education!

Open Connections announces the return of Early Connections, a program for parents and infants/toddlers (newborn to 3 years)!

A few of the issues this program will explore are: the role of parents as supporters of natural learning and open education; separating out our needs from our wants, and helping our youth do the same; identifying communication barriers and enhancers between parents & youth and setting boundaries that work.

The program is 6 weeks in length:

Learn about what’s in our own backyards! Begin this fascinating program by taking a walk through Wilmington State Parks and learning how to identify indigenous plants and animals. Then move to the zoo to take a walk on the wild side and learn about exotic animals and why they matter to us here in Delaware.
Teachers will learn some valuable teaching tools to educate their classroom children on indigenous and exotic plant and animal species.

Cargo for Conservation
A Loan Kit at the Brandywine Zoo
Thursday the 29th 5:30-8:30 p.m.
Teacher Workshop
Bring Wildlife Conservation to life with the Brandywine Zoo’s Cargo for Conservation Loan Kit. Topics of discussion will include: Being a wise consumer, making a good choice when choosing a pet, being knowledgeable about the wildlife trade and how it affects each of us. We’ll explore the contents of the kit which includes wildlife conservation activities and confiscated endangered wildlife biofacts such as an elephant tusk, python skin, crocodile purse, and much more! At the end of the workshop, teachers will be certified to use the Cargo for Conservation and best of all they can schedule the kit for use during the school year! Program takes place in the Brandywine Zoo’s Education Building.

Open Connections Presentation: Activity Centers for Youths!

Work/Play Environments for Young People of All Ages

This color slide presentation is all about designing and building work/play spaces for young people in their home or other education center. Parents and other educators with only novice woodworking skills can create multilevel structures that can include climbing platforms, storefronts, puppet theaters, sleeping areas, storage spaces, invention shops and numerous other components that will provide young people with thousands of hours of creative and self-directed play and purposeful activity. No home is too small for some kind of structure; no budget is too tight to keep anyone from building something useful. Bedrooms, basements, living/family rooms, classrooms, and even hallways have housed exciting and workable solutions to such challenges as sibling rivalry, excessive clutter, combining toddlers with adult-furnished areas, and constructive entertainment that beats the boob tube every time.

Open Connections has featured such "environments" since it opened in 1978 and has designed and/or built numerous spaces for families of two-to-twelve year olds and non-profit centers such as nursery schools and day care centers. All you need are some basic concepts and the energy and interest to put them into practice. Your youths will never stop thanking you.
