Hawk Watch Field Trip Offered by the Delaware Dunlins Youth Birders Club!
October is upon us, and the raptors are flying!Join the Delaware Dunlins Youth Birders Club

Ashland Nature Center
Learn all about hawk watching and fall migration!
*Meet at the Ashland Nature Center picnic area at 9:00am.
*Visit the Ashland Hawk Watch and learn all about the fall hawk migration.
*Look for Red-tailed, Sharp-shinned and Cooper’s Hawks, falcons and more.
*Take a fall hike & enjoy your picnic lunch.
*Try out a variety of binoculars, scopes and other tools used by birders.

Ashland Nature Center: Fall Programs for Homeschoolers!
Field Studies Program SeriesThese programs are designed to meet state and national standards for students age 6 through 12.

Homeschool Program #1
Rock Hounds
Course #: F08-098-AS
Max: 15
Date: Friday Sept. 12 Time: 12:30 pm to 2:30 pm
Investigate the rock cycle as it relates to Ashland’s geologic past and our local geology. Hike the trails at Ashland to discover current examples of weathering, erosion and deposition, and use rock hammers and goggles to collect mineral and rock samples for identification.

Inspirations Along the Brandywine

Enjoy an afternoon along the Brandywine Creek at Point Lookout, farm of Jamie Wyeth.
See the surrounding forests, wildlife and farm animals that are featured in generations of Wyeth art. Try your creative hand while sketching, painting and taking digital photos. Let the Brandywine inspire you! This program meets at Ashland Nature Center, then (van or carpool to Pt. Lookout.)

Fall Migration on Hawk Watch Hill

Time: 12:30 pm to 2:30 pm
View one of the extraordinary spectacles of fall – migration! This is the peak migratory period for Kestrels, Merlins, Peregrines, Bald Eagles and Sharp-shinneds Hawks. Join Ashland’s hawk-watching research team and learn how to use binoculars & spotting scopes and add to the data collected each hour. Hawk identification, migration patterns and use of the hawk migration database will all be explained in this lesson.

Delaware Bay Study

Investigate the diversity of life in the Delaware Bay Estuary. Study the rich diversity of plant and animals life that depend on the bay. Use dip nets, seine nets and binoculars to search for wildlife. Arrange organisms in appropriate food-chains, identify them as producers, consumers or decomposers.

Discovering Trees

Date: Friday Nov. 21 Time: 12:30 pm to 2:30 pm
Investigate a variety of different trees and observe their similarities and differences. Learn parts of trees and their functions, what trees need to grow, and how trees change throughout the year. Determine the age of the stages of forest succession, search for examples of dominant plants and animals. **Help plant trees along the Red Clay Creek floodplain. *** This program is held at Ashland Nature Center.

Farm Overnight

Date: Tuesday Oct. 28 – Wed. Oct. 29 Time: Tues. 10:00 am to Wednesday 2:30 pm
Discover the joys of farm life as you become a farmer for the day. Harvest crops from the fields and gardens and take part in afternoon livestock chores. Calculate the correct amount of food for each farm animal – and make sure they eat it. Make a farm fresh dinner, with corn, squash and creamy butter made at the farm. Pop just-picked popcorn at your evening campfire. On Wed. use digital cameras and make your own 2009 “Farmer’s Calendar”. Learn how to store seeds, and start a collection for your own spring garden. Home-base will be at the Ashland lodge, then carpool to Coverdale Farm (2 miles away) for programs.

Delaware Museum of Natural History ~ Animals in Autumn Class!
WHAT:Animals in Autumn
Families will learn how many backyard animals make adjustments to the changing seasons during the fall. Each child will make a pine cone feeder and a raccoon mask to take home.

HOWL-oween10 am - 3 pm
Celebrate the upcoming Pets in America exhibition in an enchanting way. Come dressed as your favorite pet! Have your fortune told, trick-or-treat for pet-related items in Enchanted Woods, take a hayride through the garden, and watch experts carve a giant pumpkin. At 11 a.m., a costume parade, led by the Cat in the Hat, travels from Icewell Terrace to Enchanted Woods.
$6, ages 2-11;
$3, Member child.
Free admission to one accompanying adult with every child's ticket purchased.
