In observance of National Childhood Obesity Awareness Month.
As families explore the museum they will encounter stations designed to teach and promote healthy habits. Kids can try kickboxing and yoga, and learn about the importance of good oral hygiene.

General admission is $12 per person
(children under 12 months are free).

Pre -School Art and Crafts
Ages 4-6
An hour of creative art and craft projects for your younger children! Different projects each session. A fun class! Meets on the same day and time as our Art Class for older children for your convenience. Basic supplies included. Class limit 10.

7-13 years
Your children will have the opportunity to express themselves creatively using pencil, charcoal, pastel, paint and clay over the school year. Basic art skills will be introduced as well as some fun projects that incorporate these skills. A complete well rounded art program. Basic supplies are provided. There may be a small material fee for special projects. Class limit 10.

Home School Physical Education
Boys and Girls 6-12 yrs.
A basic elementary school PE program. This class is designed to run for a regular year following the Brandywine YMCA sessions. Different activities will be introduced during the year. Come join us for fun and rewarding physical activity! Please register in advance.

The Brandywine Y offers a wide variety of classes and programs to members, programs members and the community, including: Dance, swimming, tumbling, archery, art classes, cooking, knitting, youth leadership and much, much more. They offer a very popular summer camp program at the Hanby Outdoor Center, family overnights and other events. The pool at the Hanby Outdoor Center is open to members from Memorial Day to Labor day - weekends and weekday afternoons and evening.

BrainPOP is an educational program providing content spanning 7 main subjects, including: Science, Math, English, Social Studies, Health, Arts and Music, and Technology.

We have watched these movies over and over. The kids take the quizzes offered after each movie. They have subscription packages for families as well as homeschoolers. They offer teacher support and are working on offering lesson plans in the future. You try out BrainPop for days for free, thereafter you need to purchase a subscription.

The only way to really understand what BrainPop is all about is to log on and try it for yourself!

Co-operative Extensions

These are the people who bring you 4H and much, much more. Your local Cooperative Extension Office is a must have on any homeschooler's list of resources. Every state has one, they are connected Universities, and although agriculture is an important component it is not by any means the limit of their activities. Services and community assistance offered by Cooperative Extension offices include gardening, home economics, safety, community leadership as well as agricultural issues and more. In NY our local Extension office would identify Deer Ticks taken off my kids and keep the sample tick as part of their data base. They also offered an inoculation clinic for low income families and did blood testing on children for levels of lead.

The Delaware Cooperative Extension states that it "connects the public with university knowledge, research and resources to address youth, family, community and agricultural needs." The Pennsylvania Cooperative Extension mission statement states that it "connects the public with university knowledge, research and resources to address youth, family, community and agricultural needs." The Maryland Cooperative Extension describes itself as "a statewide, non-formal education system within the college of Agriculture and Natural Resources and the University of Maryland Eastern Shore... educational programs and problem-solving assistance are available to citizens and are based on the research and experience of land grant universities..."


Today's 4H clubs, are also no longer just an rural agricultural club for kids on farms. I have lead 4H groups whose focus never touch on agriculture at all. In NY we ran an astronomy and rocketry themed club and a theater arts club, as well as a Junior Naturalist club. 4H clubs take place in cities and suburbs and are available to youngsters as cloverbud clubs all the way through teen leadership programs. Homeschoolers are taking advantage of the opportunities afforded under the umbrellas of a 4H club to form co-op of all sorts.
